The Lighthouse

It was a rather cold, windy and choppy day at sea, aboard our small wooden boat, bobbing somewhere off Iceland’s north coast. I had subjected myself to this discomfort for one exciting reason, to see Whales up close. So confident were our guides, that they proudly stated it was almost certain that we would spot these magnificent creatures. After hours at sea without so much as a glimpse, we had no choice but to accept the fact that we were in the ‘almost’ category. Feeling disheartened and a little unwell, we headed for shore, where the promise of a warm drink seemed like it would become the new highlight of the day. On our return, however, something caught my eye. The bright red colour of the lighthouse standing out from the cold and muted colours of the hill in the background felt very pleasing to me. The exact location and name of this lighthouse remains a mystery to me, but I am very happy we passed it.
